Sunscreen protection: Sunscreen is such an important part of your daily skin care regimen especially for protection.
Decrease your risk of skin cancer: SPF 15 is the FDA’s minimum recommendation for protection against skin cancer and sunburn, but the AAD (American Academy of Dermatology) recommends choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Regular daily use of SPF 30 sunscreen can reduce your risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) by about 40%, and lower your melanoma risk by 50%.
Help prevent premature aging of the skin caused by the sun: This includes fine lines and wrinkles, sagging, age spots, and uneven skin tone.
Keeps Complexion Even: Using sunscreen on your face helps to keep your complexion even. Sun damage is one of the many causes of uneven skin tones and daily sunscreen helps to prevent those effects.
Sunscreen includes active ingredients that help prevent the sun’s UV rays from reaching your skin. Here’s how these two types of sunscreens help protect your skin.
Physical (mineral) sunscreen ingredients (including the minerals titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) work by sitting on top of the skin to deflect and scatter damaging UV rays away from the skin.
Chemical sunscreen absorbs the UV rays before they can damage your skin. This is done by changing UV rays into heat, then releasing that heat from the skin.
Choosing a Sunscreen:
Broad spectrum: Protects your skin from both UVA and UVB rays.
SPF 15: Ideal for every day, occasional exposure and short intervals in the sun.
SPF 30 or higher: Necessary for extended periods outdoors, including beach days, pool days, and outdoor activities. SPF 30 is also a must if your work requires you to be outside.
Water resistant: For swimming or outdoor exercise. Sunscreens labeled water resistant are tested to be effective for up to 40-80 minutes after your skin becomes wet.
Use even on cloudy days: 80% of the suns UV radiation reaches the earth. Going unprotected on an overcast day can also lead to skin damage. Whether you decide to use a physical sunscreen or chemical sunscreen, it’s important to remember that the sun can not only damage your skins appearance but can also cause skin cancer.
I’ve tried many different sunscreens over the years and I have to say that my absolute favorite is EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 This sunscreen not only offers SPF 46 but it also contains niacinamide (vitamin B3), hyaluronic acid and lactic acid, which are ingredients that promote the appearance of healthy-looking skin.
